North Central College senior Laurel White of Bloomington, Ill., has earned a highly competitive Dunn Fellowship for 2010-2011.

The fellowship provides a full salary and benefits to work for one year in the Governor of Illinois’ Press Office in Springfield, Ill.. Top students from around the country apply and fewer than 20 fellowships are awarded each year. The program begins in August and ends in July of the following year.

White is majoring in English/writing at North Central College and has been accepted into the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She will defer her enrollment to Northwestern for a year to serve as a Dunn Fellow.

“I'm incredibly honored and excited to have received a Dunn Fellowship,” White says. “I'm sure it will be an excellent learning opportunity, one which wouldn't have been possible without the encouragement and support of North Central College faculty. I am lucky to have had a group of excellent professors to support and encourage me throughout the application process and my entire academic career.”

While at North Central, White received a Richter Grant to study public policy journalism by researching British impressions of the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign as a study abroad student in London. For research into the culture of political satire, she attended a taping of the “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” She presented her work at the National College Honors Conference in Washington, D.C., and at the College’s Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research. In addition, she was a College Scholar at North Central and served as co-editor-in-chief of the Chronicle student newspaper.

White is a graduate of University High School in Normal, IL.
