Dec. 9, 2010—North Central College will host a testing site for the American Mathematics Contest 10 and 12 (AMC 10 and AMC 12) on Feb. 23. These contests are the premier high school examinations in mathematics.

The AMC 10 is open to students who have not yet completed grade 10, and the AMC 12 is open to students who have not completed grade 12. Students may participate in both the A (these tests are offered only at high schools) and B (offered at North Central College) exams. Students who are either home-schooled or enrolled in area high schools are invited to participate. The contest will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, on the second floor of the College's Harold and Eva White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Ave., Naperville.

Registration is now open and will close Jan. 15. Contact North Central College Professor of Mathematics Richard Wilders at 630-637-5234 or by email at to request a registration form. There is no fee to participate in either contest.

The Committee on the American Mathematics Competitions organizes national contests like the AMC 10 and 12 competitions on Feb. 23 in order to recognize and reward student excellence in mathematics. Each format is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice examination in secondary school mathematics, containing problems that can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts. Top scorers in these contests qualify to compete in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination with the possibility of qualifying to compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad.

"The AMC contest is the premier contest for students in these age groups," says Wilders, who is also chair of North Central's science division and the Marie and Bernice Gantzert Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. "Youth who have a knack for and an interest in mathematics really enjoy these types of competitions. Our campus is centrally located to many students in the western suburbs."
