A collection of black and white photography by Larry Blackwood featuring transcendent imagery of crows and ravens will be exhibited in “Opus Corvus” through Oct. 6 at North Central College.
The exhibit is free and open to the public in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St., Naperville. An artist reception will take place 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, where guests can meet Blackwood and discuss his work. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
“Opus Corvus” combines creative work with the genus of the Corvidae family of birds, which contains the revered and reviled crows and ravens. This collection of toned black and white photographs adds Blackwood’s personal impressions to the large body of work about these ignoble yet sublime creatures. The work acknowledges the varied folklore, portraying them as both iconic characters and as mysterious and surreal inhabitants of our world.
Blackwood is a self-taught photographer with nearly 40 years of experience exploring self-expression through photography. Born and raised in Kansas, he holds a doctorate in statistics and worked in the field for 30 years while pursuing photography part time—eventually making it his full-time career in 2007.
He has had numerous major solo exhibitions and has also appeared in many other juried shows, with venues including the Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, the Center for Photographic Arts in Carmel, Calif., and the Center for Fine Art Photography in Ft. Collins, Colo.
His work has been published in major fine art photography publications including LensWork, Best of Photography Annual and Shutterbug. In addition, he has received a number of awards in international photography competitions including the World Photography Awards and the B&W Spider Awards.
Oesterle Library Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and noon to midnight Sundays. Contact Nickole C. Lanham, North Central’s gallery director, at 630-637-5375 or firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more about the exhibit.
