Feb. 22, 2011 - After being picked to finish sixth by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin head coaches, the North Central College men's basketball team has achieved in the face of long odds and been delcared CCIW Co-Champions for the 2010-2011 season.
The Cardinals, who finished the regular season 15-10 overall, went 11-3 against CCIW opposition to match the mark posted by Augustana College (22-3). The sixth-ranked Vikings lost, 70-68, at Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday to tie with North Central for first place in the CCIW standings and give the Cardinals a share of their first conference title since the 1989-90 campaign.
By virtue of its 6-1 record in its final seven games of the season, North Central wins the tiebreaker over the Vikings and earns the right to host the CCIW Tournament. The winner of the tournament receives the CCIW's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.
The tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at Gregory Arena. Augustana will play Wheaton College in the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday, with the Cardinals to take on Illinois Wesleyan at 7:30. The CCIW Tournament Championship game will be played on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
