Sarah Ackerman, who earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and finance from North Central College in 2006, has been honored with a "Rising Star" award by a pair of special events trade groups.
Ackerman works for GEP Destination Management in the Atlanta area. Each year the Greater Atlanta Chapters of the International Special Events Society (ISES) and the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) produce the Allie Awards.
The Allie Awards were founded in 1988 by Tim Lundy, CSEP (Certified Special Events Professional). He wanted to create a platform for the local event industry to not only showcase their talents, but also drive them to produce events that could compete on national and even global levels.
On April 1, Ackerman received the Tim Lundy, CSEP – Rising Star Award. The spirit and intent of this award is designed to honor, recognize, encourage and inspire a young event professional toward his or her greatest potential in the special events industry.
After graduating from North Central, Ackerman attended Arizona State University to pursue a master's degree in recreation and tourism. After graduate school she started her career in tourism at the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau then found her way to Atlanta where she worked at the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau in the Tradeshow Sales Department. She joined the GEP Destination Management team in 2010 as a creative services coordinator and progressed to digital media manager. She now handles the website and social media for all nine GEP Destination Management locations across the United States and Bahamas.
