Macek discusses media activism, film scholarship and more at conference

Steve Macek, North Central College associate professor of speech communication and coordinator of urban and suburban studies, attended the Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference in Seattle this spring. He served as a respondent on a panel about Detroit, automobiles and film, and also participated in a roundtable discussion on media activism and film scholarship.

Macek was joined by peers Chris Robe of Florida Atlantic University, Mobina Hashmi of Brooklyn College, Jack Bratich of Rutgers University, Carol Stabile of the University of Oregon and others. Topic titles were “The Disenchantment of the Automobile (Industry) in American Media” and “Media, Activism, and the Cultural Industries: Theorizing the Horizons of Resistance.”

Macek has been on faculty at North Central College since 2002. He earned his B.A. from University of Wisconsin at Madison and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
