May 22, 2012—Lauren Smith of Byron was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Theatre Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.
Smith is a senior majoring in theatre and psychology. She is the daughter of Kathryn Smith and the late Randy Smith and is a graduate of Byron High School.
She has been actively involved in the College’s theatre and musical theatre productions. She’s performed leading roles in “Canon Fire,” “Guys and Dolls” and “Phedre.” Smith is especially known for providing the voice of Christine in the College’s production of “The Phantom of the Opera” when a student originally cast for the role was not able to sing due to illness.
A member of North Central’s Concert Choir, Smith has worked in the Office of Admission as a tour guide for three years. She studied abroad in Brazil and her name regularly appears on the Dean’s List, which recognizes students with high academic achievement. She also is chair of the senior class gift committee and chair of the Legacy Program, which connects students and alumni to provide opportunities for a lifelong commitment to the North Central community.
