North Central College’s Summer Language Institute offers international students the opportunity to study English during intensive multi-week programs set in both classroom and informal environments.

Participants in the Summer Language Institute stay on campus and with local host families. The courses are ideal for Chicago-area residents with family or friends from other countries who want to sharpen their English skills during study in the United States. North Central College provides applicants with the necessary documentation to apply for student visas in their home country.

The credit courses include instruction in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with grammar and vocabulary integrated into each area. The program incorporates practice in cross-cultural living and communication, with special emphasis on becoming familiar with American culture. Classes are taught by English Language Learning (ELL) professional faculty, all of whom have at least a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

“The Office of International Programs invites students from all over the world to participate in one of the few intensive, summer English as a Second Language programs offered in suburban Chicago,” says Kelly Pilleux, international student advisor. “The institute is perfect for students preparing to attend college and needing to improve TOEFL scores, for college students looking to improve their English skills, and for all students interested in getting a glimpse of American culture over the summer. Each year the SLI students enjoy the city of Naperville, the short train ride to Chicago and the numerous field trips and activities in between.”

Two Summer Language Institute programs are offered: a five-week program from June 30 through Aug. 6 and a three-week program from Aug. 2 through Aug. 20. Fees include program, room and board, books, activities, a weekend home stay with a local family and health insurance. Students wishing to live off-campus may attend at the non-resident rate. Applications and deposits are due May 15 for the three-week program and May 17 for the five-week program.
