Naperville-area high school students can learn about earning college credit while still in high school during an Open House for the Lederman Scholars Program May 12 at North Central College.

The Open House kicks off with registration at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, in Smith Hall on the second floor of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St., Naperville.

The Lederman Scholars Program appeals to academically gifted students in Naperville School District 203, Indian Prairie School District 204, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Benet Academy in Lisle and other high schools in the DuPage County region. The program is named in honor of Dr. Leon Lederman, director emeritus of Fermi National Laboratory in Batavia and winner of the Nobel Prize in physics.

Lederman Scholars can earn up to two years of transferable college credit while continuing to attend their current high school. Scholars can begin the program as early as this summer. Lederman Scholars pursue a rigorous college curriculum among their peers and traditional-aged college students.

Richard Wilders, Gantzert Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Director of the Lederman Scholars Program, serves as academic advisor to all participants. Wilders works with students, parents and high school personnel to create the appropriate program of study for each student.

Participants attend regular classes at North Central College, all taught by North Central faculty. They have full access to all campus facilities and the College’s extensive extra-curricular offerings, except in cases where outside agencies such as the NCAA prohibit such participation. Upon successful completion of the program, their work at North Central College as well as all credits earned through Advanced Placement courses are posted to their North Central College transcripts, and participants are awarded a certificate of completion at the College’s annual Lederman Scholars Dinner.

Prospective Lederman Scholars are asked to complete a regular North Central College admission application along with a Lederman Scholar Application. Lederman Scholars who maintain at least a 3.3 (out of 4) grade-point average in their North Central College coursework are eligible for admission to North Central College as Presidential Scholars at a time of their choosing.
Qualified students who are not able to attend the Open House are invited to contact Dr. Wilders at 630-637-5234 or by e-mail at rjwilders@noctrl.edu. Visit http://northcentralcollege.edu/admission/lederman-scholars to learn more about the program.
