Giuseppe Pellicano of Naperville was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Art Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College. He was also inducted to SALUTE, the Veteran’s National Honor Society.

Pellicano is a senior majoring in studio art at North Central College and has been accepted to a graduate program in art at Northern Illinois University where he will work toward a master’s degree in fine arts.

A graduate of Downers Grove North High School, Pellicano is a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a medic in Germany, California and Kosovo from 2000 to 2005. He has been pursuing his studies at North Central as a nontraditional student and a married father of three.

Pellicano has exhibited his work at various shows and galleries, including Chicago’s Prak-sis Gallery and Jackson Junge Gallery, as well as North Central’s 2012 Senior Art Show and a three-person exhibit, “No Common Cense.” Pellicano crafts military boots that memorialize soldiers lost in war. He receives requests from family members for the boots and personalizes them with the soldiers’ names, ranks and dates of their death. He received a Richter Independent Study Fellowship from North Central to help fund his project, titled “Left, Left, Left, Right, Left.”

He presented a different work, “War Pigs,” at the 2012 National Conference on Undergraduate Research at Weber State University in Utah and at North Central’s Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research. This project has been nominated for the Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award by the International Sculpture Center.
