Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, presented a paper, titled “Downfall of the Turner Movement in the United States,” at the German American Studies Conference at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., on April 13.

Gems also coauthored a book chapter, titled “Einblickein den amerikanischen College Sport” (Insight into American College Sport), with Gertrud Pfister, professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The chapter was published in Germany by Annette Hofmann. ed., in “Sport in den USA” (Sport in the USA), 2012, 113-124.

Gems has been a member of North Central College’s faculty since 1988. He earned his B.A. from Northeastern Illinois University, his M.S. from the University of Arizona and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
