Nov. 23, 2010—Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, one of the nation’s premier dance companies, performs Feb. 3 at North Central College.

The New York City-based dance troupe performs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in North Central College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $25 and $15; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

The company, led by co-founder and artistic director Carlota Santana, delivers inspiring performances that transcend cultural boundaries. Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is known for the purity of its work and its unique and creative way of enriching the art of flamenco. The company has actively encouraged the creativity and innovation of young artists from Spain and the United States while keeping the company faithful to the powerful traditions of flamenco.

Flamenco dance is an expressive form that mixes percussive footwork with intricate hand, arm and body movements. True to its founding vision, the company commissions new work with original choreography and music. Recent creations include “Burlador” (The Trickster), an innovative dance drama based on tales of the legendary deceiver Don Juan, and “Bailes de Ida y Vuelta,” a journey through Latin America to show how flamenco has been influenced by Caribbean, Latino and Afro-Latino sounds.

Founded in 1983 as Spanish Dance Arts Company, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana believes flamenco has can bridge cultural differences and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds.
