Ereka Funkhouser of York, Pa., was recognized with two academic awards—the Outstanding Major in Japanese and the Outstanding Student in the Arts and Letters Division—during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.
Funkhouser is a senior majoring in Japanese and classical civilization with a minor in English at North Central College. She is the daughter of John Funkhouser and a graduate of York Suburban Senior High School.
She presented her research, titled “Nobilior Pomis: The Fruits of Latin-Japanese Translation,” at the College’s 2012 Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research. For one year in 2011, Funkhouser studied abroad at Iwate University in Morioka, Japan, and was one of six North Central students studying in Japan when the March 11 earthquake struck the country. Days after the event and safely accounted for, she shared her experiences via Skype to Chicago’s ABC7 TV.
She serves as a tutor in Japanese at North Central, and her name regularly appears on the Dean’s List, which recognizes students with high academic achievement.
