May 21, 2012—Emily Schmidt of Mascoutah, Ill., was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in English Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.
Schmidt is a senior majoring in theatre and English writing at North Central College. She is the daughter of Bradley and Mary Schmidt and is a 2008 graduate of Mascoutah High School.
She has served as a tutor in the College’s EDGE structured study program and in 2009 was honored with the Mark A. Reid Freshman Leadership Award, which is presented to the first-year student who exemplifies characteristics of leadership, cooperation and care for others.
Schmidt is part of North Central’s prestigious College Scholar Honors Program, which culminates with a honors thesis, and her name regularly appears on the Dean’s List. She was chosen to present her original poetry at Chicago’s 13th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival and she presented her academic research at North Central’s 2012 Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.
She has also performed in theatrical productions, including “The Threepenny Opera,” “The Wedding Singer,” and was among a group of six students who created and presented “An Evening in Revue” that was performed as part of the College’s Student Director Series in 2010 and later at the 10th Annual Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, the world’s largest sketch comedy festival.
