Feb. 19, 2011—The DuPage Symphony Orchestra performs its fourth subscription concert of the 2010-2011 season at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville.

The program showcases two quintessential American masters, Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein.  The orchestra will perform Barber’s Overture to “The School for Scandal” and “Adagio for Strings,” and Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story” and Overture to “Candide.” These familiar and favorite tunes represent the American school of composition that developed in the mid-20th century, based on European traditions and driven by the American spirit of simplicity and optimism.

The winner of the DSO’s Young Artists Auditions will also be featured on this otherwise all-American program.  Daniel Shen, son of Guoyin and Jianfei Shen, was awarded First Place in the Young Artists Auditions held on Feb. 5. Daniel will perform excerpts of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. He is a sophomore at Naperville Central High School.

Tickets are $28/adults, $25/senior citizens and $11/students; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.

As part of the DuPage Symphony’s educational mission, the DSO is pleased to host “Brownies with Barbara”  from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 18. This is an opportunity to witness the behind the scenes workings of the orchestra by attending the first half of the dress rehearsal for the March 19 concert. Following the rehearsal attendees are welcome to join Music Director Barbara Schubert and the DSO musicians for refreshments, provided by My Chef Catering, and conversation. A suggested donation of $5 per adult is appreciated.
