The DuPage Symphony Orchestra welcomes emerging violinist Elena Urioste in “Bold and Beautiful” Nov. 19 at North Central College.
As the second of five DuPage Symphony Orchestra (DSO) performances this season, “Bold and Beautiful” continues the celebration of great music, stupendous soloists and superb musicians, all under the masterful direction of Maestra Barbara Schubert. Schubert has been honored this year for her 25 years of services to the DSO.
The performance begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $28/adults, $25/seniors and $11/students; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.
While a stylistic contrast to the opening concert’s resonating power, “Bold and Beautiful” will enchant audience members with rich expressiveness and technically superlative works. The program opens with Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture,” inspired by Goethe’s great tragedy of the same name.
Patrons will be lifted to soaring heights when rising superstar violinist Urioste joins the orchestra for Samuel Barber’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.” This richly romantic work, requiring vast technical skill, is uniquely well-matched for Urioste.
The featured symphonic masterpiece fills the second half of the program when the DSO performs Johannes Brahms’ melodically triumphant and dramatic “Symphony No. 1 in C minor,” a sensational accomplishment that took Brahms more than two decades to complete.
Attendees are invited to join former WFMT host Scott Thomas for a pre-concert educational program at Wentz Concert Hall beginning at 7:15 p.m., just before the concert, to explore more about the repertoire. Similar programs are offered before each DSO series performance; these programs are typically free to subscribers, while nonsubscribers may make a nominal donation. Registration for the educational programs is not required.
Further information about this performance, the DSO season, making donations and other DSO concerts and events is available by calling the DuPage Symphony Orchestra office at 630-778-1003 or visiting dupagesymphony.org to learn more.
