Concert Choir takes first-ever European tour

March 4, 2011—North Central College’s Concert Choir will embark on its first-ever European concert tour March 16-24. Some 36 students of the nearly 60-voice mixed choir have raised their own financial support and will participate in the American Celebration of Music tour to various sites in Italy.

Directed by Professor of Music Jeordano Martínez, the Concert Choir will sing during Catholic masses at St. Peter’s Basilica at Vatican City in Rome and at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and at concerts in Florence, Venice and Siena.

“We’ve traveled all over the United States, but never Europe,” says Martínez, a Naperville resident. “We decided a year ago to sing and tour in Italy. Our talented students are really excited about performing in such historical venues, especially the Vatican.”

Martínez noted that the choir will sing in historic cathedral venues, which have organs for accompaniment. The choir’s piano accompanist David Schmitz, who is associate professor of mathematics at North Central, is also very proficient on the organ. “David not only knows mathematics,” says Martínez, “but he studied organ throughout his four years as an undergraduate student at Notre Dame and will accompany us in these grand cathedrals. Without him on organ, this tour would not have been possible.”

When the choir isn’t performing or rehearsing, it plans to tour many historical sites, from the Roman Forum, Coliseum and Pantheon in Rome to St. Mark’s Square in Venice and the Ponte Vecchio and Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.

Martínez has been director of the Concert Choir and choral activities at North Central College for 24 years. He leads the Opera Workshop, teaches courses in music history and literature, and is music director for the College’s musical theatre productions. Martínez has been recognized on two occasions by the College for distinguished teaching with the Teacher of the Year awards. He’s also conductor of the Naperville Chorus, a 125-voice College-community oratorio chorus.

The Concert Choir will give a preview performance in Naperville of the repertoire they plan to sing in Italy. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 13, in North Central’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $5/adults, $3/students and senior citizens; call 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit
