Wade Balsamo, a freshman at North Central College, is the winner of a video scholarship contest sponsored by Cynthia Kay and Company (CK & CO).

Balsamo, of Barrington, is passionate about production and his efforts to promote Walk On, a philanthropic organization that provides equine-assisted activities to people with physical, cognitive, social and emotional disabilities. Walk On helps inspire people to advance to their highest potential.

Laurie Hamen, North Central College vice president for enrollment management, athletics and student affairs, will become the ninth president of Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Hamen, 54, of River Forest, has been an administrator at North Central College since 1996 and a vice president since 1999. Under her leadership the College’s enrollment increased 100 percent to 2,700 undergraduates and the number of students living on campus increased 50 percent to 1,500 residents.

“Helping people is my goal,” says Steve Hlavac ’12, founder and owner of Beyond Measure Training in Naperville. His business was founded on that principle and his life reflects it.

Steve Hlavac ’12 has always loved fitness and training. An exercise science graduate, he’s the all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards in Cardinal football and was an outfielder in baseball. That passion led to helping college friends with personal training and evolved into a career and the launch of Beyond Measure Training.

This year’s techFest program for faculty and staff includes a variety of technology-related workshops, including ones that cover recording and editing of video and audio, and utilizing audio and video for websites, Facebook pages or email attachments. Other sessions focus on designing posters, newsletters and better spreadsheets, mapping a trip, giving a presentation and organizing events. A workshop on mobile computing will be co-led by President Hammond. All sessions will be held in Carnegie Hall.

Ramona Wis, North Central College Mimi Rolland Professor in the Fine Arts and chair and professor of music, was Honors Chorus Guest Conductor for the Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) District IX Festival held Nov. 23 at East Aurora High School. Wis rehearsed the 306-voice chorus, chosen by audition from among 50 high school choral programs in the western and northwestern Illinois area, and then conducted the ensemble in a culminating concert, which also featured the Honors Band and Honors Chorus of District IX.
