North Central College awarded federal grant to address gender-based violence

A grant will enable North Central College, the City of Naperville, Edward Hospital and local agencies to establish a program to address gender-based violence.

North Central College in cooperation with the City of Naperville, Edward Hospital and local social service agencies has been awarded a $274,600 U.S. Department of Justice grant to spearhead establishment of a comprehensive program to improve victim services and resources, enhance education and prevention, and strengthen policies and protocols for addressing gender-based violence.

Gifted high school-aged students can earn up to two years of college credit while still in high school through North Central College’s Lederman Scholars Program. Prospective students and their parents are invited to learn more at an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the College’s Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. Registration begins at 6 p.m.

Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, and four current and former students—Donglun Liu ’14, Steven Mackey ’13, Tyler Schroeder ’13 and Kyle Thomas ’13—were coauthors of a paper titled “Average Bridge Number of Shadow Resolutions” that was published in the Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications, October 2013.

Works of four North Central College students are featured in the monthlong “Autumn Student Art Exhibit.”

The exhibit includes paintings, drawings and sculptures created by sophomore Lauren Denler of Homer Glen, junior Nicole “CoCo” Digweed of Plainfield and seniors Liz Halbmaier of Burlington and LeAnn Spitzer of Rockford. The exhibit runs Nov. 1 through Nov. 27 in the Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St. An artist reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10; complimentary refreshments will be served.

Sarah Lureau, North Central College assistant professor of accounting, chaired and coordinated the Illinois Accounting Teachers Conference (ILATC), held Sept. 27-28 and hosted by North Central College.

Some 75 faculty members from various colleges and universities across Illinois attended the conference, which offered 10 sessions and 10.5 continuing professional education credits for certified public accountants. The conference theme was based on “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow of Accounting Education.”
