Deanne Reedquist Sramek has been a clinical nurse researcher at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY, for seven years. She helps provide staff with the knowledge and resources to access and utilize evidence in their nursing practice. She educates new graduates and nurses on research and evidence-based practice, assists with research projects and practice changes, and mentors undergraduate and graduate students with their projects.

Jim Owczarski ’02 captured third place in the national Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) awards for feature writing. He’s a sports journalist at OnMilwaukee.com, a daily online magazine. He joined the staff in March after nearly nine years with the Chicago Sun-Times Media Network West Division and will cover the Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks, Green Bay Packers and other sports teams in the Milwaukee area. Bob Pickett '73

Bob Pickett is in his 16th season as the producer/director of the St. Louis Concert Choir, a community Christian choral organization representing nearly 30 churches in the greater St. Louis metro area. This summer he and legendary music producer Thurlow Spurr are bringing together 200 singers from across America to perform in concert with three of Christian music’s greatest artists: winners of multiple Grammy and Dove Awards, singers Sandi Patty and Larnelle Harris, and pianist Dino in two “Festival of Praise” performances. The concerts are scheduled for Sunday, July 1, at Grace Church–St.

Matt Boresi ‘97

Matt Boresi ‘97 in April enjoyed the Washington, D.C., premier of his chamber opera titled “The Filthy Habit,” which opened in the black box theatre at Artisphere in Arlington, VA, and was produced by the opera company Urban Arias. He co-wrote the opera with composer Peter Hilliard. The principal soprano was Metropolitan Opera soprano Jennifer Aylmer. The production featured a newly commissioned 15-piece orchestration and players from the National Symphony and Washington Opera orchestras. Maestro Robert Wood conducted. The show originally premiered at Manhattan Opera Theatre in 2004.

A Student Leadership Conference—open to all students and especially student leaders at any level—will take place on campus Friday evening and Saturday during the day, April 13 and 14, with guest speakers and breakout sessions.

“It’s an opportunity for all students to develop their leadership skills,” says Jeremy Gudauskas, assistant dean of students and co-coordinator of the conference. “There will be special how-to and skills training sessions for both emerging and advanced leaders, as well as inspiring talks from alumni and community guests.”

North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

May 8, 2012—North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

Pantel, a junior, interned with The Field Museum in Chicago during winter term and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship for her work with the museum. The award was announced May 1 when Gloria Levitt, associate registrar in The Field Museum’s Department of Anthropology, hosted a talk at North Central about career opportunities in sociology and anthropology.

Admission to the second annual Sounds of New Music Festival is free for North Central students, faculty and staff. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 and Thursday, April 12 in Wentz Concert Hall.

Tonight’s performance features the Bugallo Williams Piano Duo and Thursday evening showcases the Bang On a Can All-Stars.

Photographer Hunt Harris takes visitors on a global expedition in the art exhibit “Images from a Well-Traveled Lens,” May 4 through June 24 at North Central College.

The exhibit is free and open to the public in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. An artist reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4. Guests can meet Harris, and complimentary refreshments will be served.
