Gems named international fellow at sport institute

 Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, delivered two presentations in December 2011 at the Bangladesh Institute of Sport Sciences in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He also was inducted as an international fellow of the institute, along with another American and international scholars from Turkey, Denmark, Malaysia, Great Britain and Spain. The events were attended by a host of sports dignitaries and the Bangladesh minister of commerce.

Soulful program highlights Black History Month

North Central College features “Deep River: A Spiritual Journey”—a live musical and narrative program about African slaves before the Civil War—on Feb. 23.

On Feb. 23 during Black History Month, North Central College will feature “Deep River: A Spiritual Journey,” a live musical presentation and original narrative about African slaves who lived along the Great River before the Civil War.

The free program will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in North Central’s Koten Chapel at Kiekhofer Hall, 329 E. School St., Naperville.

Self-Employment in the Arts Conference Feb. 24-25 helps careers of aspiring artists

Participants will learn how to run their own businesses as artists Feb. 24-25 during North Central College's Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

College and high school students, educators and adults who aspire to be self-employed artists will gain valuable information about running their own businesses as artists Feb. 24-25, 2012 when North Central College hosts the 12th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

Experience Spanish culture during annual Flamenco Festival

During February, North Central College hosts its annual Flamenco Festival, featuring rhythmic music, dance, films and photography from Spanish culture.

During the month of February, North Central College will host the fifth annual Flamenco Festival that showcases the emotive, rhythmic music and dance from Spanish culture. Several events are planned—including dance classes, films, a lecture and photography exhibit. All are open to the public and most are free.

Matt Brill '96

Matt Brill was featured in an occasional series on ncaa.org about what he learned from the college experience. At North Central, Brill was a three-time All-American in cross country, finishing second in 1995 and winning the 1996 title on the 8,000-meter course. He helped the Cardinals to the team title in 1993, when they scored a record-low 32 points, and led North Central to second-place finishes, 1994-1996. He was an eight-time All-American in track, helping the Cardinals to the 1994 outdoor title, and was a two-time GTE Academic All-American.

Larry Cooper '71

Larry Cooper performed Verdi’s “La donna é Mobile,” “Music of the Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Lady of Spain” at the Hopkins Park Band Shell in DeKalb, IL. After graduating from North Central College, he was awarded a full scholarship to Northwestern University to study opera. He also studied at the Volkwanghochschule in Essen-Werben, Germany, under full scholarship. Cooper has performed in numerous opera, operetta, concert and oratorio performances.
