When the building opened in 1902, it represented the growing importance of physical education and athletics on campus.

As North Central College looks back on its 150-year history during its yearlong Sesquicentennial celebration, February presents an opportunity to recall a devastating event that resulted in major transformations to the school and campus.

On Feb. 23, 1929, a fire of unknown origin destroyed Nichols Hall. When the building opened in 1902, it was just the second structure on campus—joining Old Main—and represented the growing importance of physical education and athletics in the lives of college students.

For third straight year, a record number of students will represent North Central College at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).

For the third consecutive year, a record number of students from North Central College will participate in the nation’s leading conference on undergraduate research.

Forty-five students will represent North Central at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) March 29-31 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. No other college or university in Illinois will send more students to this prestigious conference.

Each February, North Central College celebrates National Girls and Women in Sport Day with a luncheon and presentation of the Cleo Tanner Award. This year's luncheon takes place at noon Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the Harold and Eva White Activities Center, where Bev Thornburg will be honored as the 2012 Cleo Tanner Award recipient for her positive effect on women's athletics at North Central. Students, faculty and staff are invited to walk in and attend the free event.

Sophomore marketing and management major Sarah Bryan has joined the staff of Chicago Equestrian, where she will work in social media and event coverage.

Chicago Equestrian is an organization that provides news, events, contacts and marketing services for the equine industry, including an online magazine.

North Central College alumnus Don Pilmer ’87 has been promoted to executive vice president and head of commercial banking with Aurora-based Old Second Bank.

A lifelong Aurora resident, he began his banking career at Old Second more than 20 years ago and has spent the majority of his service in commercial banking and branch development.

Pilmer earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications from North Central College where he also contributed to The Chronicle campus newspaper. He later earned an M.B.A. from Aurora University. He is

Musician, world traveler Mike Krieglstein ’10 is lecturer at university in Beijing and guest artist with WONC’s music night series Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Musician, world traveler and 2010 alumnus Mike Krieglstein will be the featured guest artist Feb. 7 as part of WONC’s Tuesday music night series. Listen to WONC-FM 89.1 from 6 to 8 p.m. to hear a live interview with Krieglstein about his recent adventures in China where he gave a lecture and performed. After the radio interview, Krieglstein will give a free live concert at 8 p.m. in the basement of the Rolland Center Boilerhouse Café.
