Connelly, Illinois House honor North Central College with Sesquicentennial resolution

The Illinois House of Representatives congratulates North Central College on its Sesquicentennial in a resolution sponsored by state Rep. Michael Connelly.

Dec. 19, 2011—The Illinois House of Representatives congratulates North Central College on its Sesquicentennial in a resolution sponsored by Michael Connelly, 48th District state representative.

The resolution commemorating the 150th anniversary of the College’s founding was adopted by the 97th General Assembly. Connelly, R-Naperville, presented a copy of the resolution to Harold R. Wilde, North Central College president, in December.

A D-Term adventure to Northern Wisconsin tested the mettle of 13 male students, who spent a night camping in the frigid wilderness as part of a leadership retreat. The three-night adventure, called “Men vs. Wild: A Men’s Leadership Expedition,” encouraged the participants to explore their life’s mission, spirituality and leadership capabilities while discussing themes like self-awareness and purpose and calling.

Naper Settlement exhibits College history

Naper Settlement’s Heritage Gallery continues to host the exhibit “150 Years: A Promising Start,” which echoes the theme of the College’s Sesquicentennial celebration. “It was  fascinating to collaborate with Naper Settlement on the development of this exhibit,” says Kim Butler, College archivist. “It’s a wonderful facility showcasing the College’s history.”

North Central College held a Veteran Students Workshop for faculty and staff on Dec. 2 to learn about the experiences of students with a military background and how the campus community can best support their adjustment back to academic and civilian life. The workshop featured guest speakers and a panel of North Central faculty and students who are veterans.

The successful Chicago Term program reached a long-held goal in fall 2011 of adding a residential option for students who want to experience city life 24/7. Four students shared a loft apartment in the Greek Town neighborhood while the balance of the participants continued to commute from Naperville.

Humanitarian Samantha Nutt, an authority on how war impacts civilians, will address honors students from across the nation Jan. 13 when North Central College hosts the 2012 Blue Key National Conference.

The Blue Key Honor Society recognizes college students at senior institutions of higher education for balanced and all-around excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. Nearly 120 students are expected to participate in the three-day national conference Jan. 13-15.

A Tellabs Foundation grant will help educators develop exciting new science demonstrations for children through a partnership with North Central and ChemWest.

Dec. 6, 2011—A Tellabs Foundation grant will help area educators develop exciting new science demonstrations for children through a partnership with North Central College and ChemWest.

North Central College and ChemWest—a nonprofit networking group for chemistry teachers—will use the $30,000 Tellabs Foundation grant to develop and share demonstrations and other practices to enhance the study of science for up to 10,000 children in area elementary, middle and high schools.
