Schacht speaks to graduate students and professors at Northwestern

Patricia M. Schacht, North Central College’s assistant professor of psychology, gave a talk titled “The Benefits of Teaching at a Liberal Arts College” to graduate students, interns and professors at Northwestern University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences on Oct. 24. She discussed the pros and cons of teaching at a small liberal arts college, as well as the application process and ways to increase their chances of landing a job at a teaching college.

Schacht was invited to share her experiences at North Central College by a professional colleague.

Civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited North Central College on Nov. 21, 1960, and spoke during chapel service on “Stride Toward Freedom.”

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited North Central’s campus on Nov. 21, 1960, and presented a speech titled “Stride Toward Freedom” in Pfeiffer Hall during one of the College’s regular chapel services.

King was the most important voice of the American civil rights movement. He was famous for using nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice and never tired of trying to end segregation laws. In 1964 he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 wins Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 gets to go to NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. He’ll also get to meet President Obama and the first lady at a White House dinner in the spring. He may even be invited to throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game.

Those are some of the perks that come with being named the Illinois Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012. The Illinois State Board of Education announced the award Oct. 22 during the Those Who Excel banquet in Normal.
