Mary McMahon, North Central College associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, gave a presentation titled “College on the MIND?” on Oct. 19 at Math Night for Parents, an event sponsored by the mathematics department at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville. Other presenters included Jim Fox ’00, math major and secondary education minor, and Amy Van Vlerah, who completed her teacher certification at North Central. Both are teachers at Neuqua.

Steve Macek, North Central College associate professor of speech communication and coordinator of urban and suburban studies, spoke as a panelist at a Media Democracy Day event at the HumanThread Gallery in Chicago Nov. 5. The “2011 Media Democracy Day-Chicago: What we’ve learned and looking ahead” was sponsored by Metro Chicago Progressive Media Network, HumanThread and Chicago Media Action and included panelists from the sponsoring groups and Occupy Chicago. Macek spoke about 2011 media events in the context of Chicago’s media history.

North Central College junior Molly Gstalter studies full time in Heidelberg, Germany, while interning as English teacher to students in local secondary school.

Molly Gstalter, a North Central College junior, has expanded her studying abroad experience during fall term in Heidelberg, Germany, by pursuing an internship. Gstalter is taking classes in German full time at the Heidelberg Universität through the American Junior Year Program, while also interning as an assistant English teacher at Hölderlin Gymnasium, a secondary school in Heidelberg.

Gstalter carries a major in German and minors in secondary education and English language learning at North Central College and is a resident of Skokie, Ill.

North Central College students ask trustees to lift dancing ban, then hold formal protest, including missing classes and dancing outside Old Main.

From the establishment of the College through the 19th century, social dancing at North Central College was viewed as a gateway to sin.

By the mid-20th century, students increasingly sought social change on campus to allow social dancing at North Central, signaling a deviation from traditional culture to a forward-minded collegiate culture. A student poll showed 70 percent of the students favored dancing.

Athletic training students among best in state in contest, one wins scholarship

North Central College’s team of athletic training seniors takes second place at Illinois Athletic Trainers Association College Bowl.

Each year, students and staff members in North Central College’s athletic training education program attend the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association (IATA) Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium for education and to compete in the College Bowl.

This year’s event was held Nov. 5-6 in Bloomington and the College Bowl competition, involving 11 participating teams, took place Nov. 6. The College Bowl is held annually at the state meeting and utilizes a “Jeopardy” format, with three rounds and a final question.

Wolf conducts oral history interviews, publishes essay

Gregory H. Wolf, North Central College professor of German, is a member of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) founded in 1971 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He published a 5,000-word essay on Steve Hargan, an All-Star pitcher in the 1960s and 1970s, most notably with the Cleveland Indians, in conjunction with SABR’s Biography Project.

Nicole Rivera, North Central College adjunct assistant professor of psychology, presented a session titled “Exploring Diversity in the First-Year College Experience” at the Diversity Research Symposium at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., Oct. 29. The conference was sponsored by Ball State’s Office of Institutional Diversity and the Department of Psychological Science.

North Central College and Evangelical Theological Seminary shared campus space, spiritual heritage from the College's earliest days in Naperville.

North Central College and Evangelical Theological Seminary, formerly the Union Biblical Institute, shared campus space and spiritual heritage from the College's earliest days in Naperville.

Incorporated in 1873, the Union Biblical Institute (UBI) began holding classes on North Central College’s campus in 1876, renting space in Old Main for a nominal fee. The Evangelical Association started UBI as a training ground for its pastors, missionaries and church workers.

North Central College’s Spanish Club Fusion Española presents its second annual Latin Music Festival Nov. 8 with professional dancers, musicians.

North Central College’s Spanish Club Fusion Española presents its second annual Latin Music Festival Nov. 8. The free event will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall and features a variety of sounds from Latin America and Spain with food for guests to enjoy. Tapas will be served before the show begins and guests are welcome to come and go as they wish.

Caliendo told the newspaper his North Central students are watching both the Tea Party and the Occupy movements with great interest.
