Based on the opinions of guidance counselors, educators and admissions professionals, Colleges of Distinction honors colleges that excel in four areas of undergraduate education: student engagement in the educational process, great teaching, vibrant learning communities and successful outcomes.

The Cardinal men’s cross country team claimed its 14th national title on Nov. 19 at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Wisconsin. Rallying from an early setback, the men returned to No. 1 in the nation for the second time in three years at the NCAA Division III National Championships.

For the second straight season the national title came down to a battle between the Midwest Region Champion Cardinals and the Haverford College (Pa.) Fords, champions of the Mideast Region. The Cardinals tallied 110 points with the runner-up Fords team finishing with a score of 172.

As the Cardinals advance in the NCAA Division III football playoffs, players are showing their support for the Thornes by playing with shaved heads in a show of solidarity with their coach. Kathie Thorne, who has attended games this season in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable form of blood cancer.

Fair Trade Friday, the North Central College Students In Free Enterprise’s (SIFE) fourth annual alternative gift fair, will be open after Thanksgiving Nov. 25 and 26 and in time for the holiday shopping season.

Convenient shopping hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26, at the red brick house at 116 S. Brainard St.—home of North Central’s faculty offices for anthropology, sociology and the Division of Human Thought and Behavior. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams—both are 2011 CCIW champions—travel to Winneconne, Wis., for the NCAA Division III National Championships Saturday, Nov. 19. The women start out at 11 a.m. and the men run at noon.

North Central College presents “In the Absence of Color,” an exhibit of silver-based black and white photography by alumnus Jon Balke Nov. 20-Jan. 5.

Silver-based black and white photographs by artist and North Central College alumnus Jon W. Balke will be on display Nov. 20 through Jan. 5 in an exhibit titled “In the Absence of Color.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St., Naperville. An artist reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, where guests can meet Balke and discuss his work. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Research paper by North Central College senior Rachel Garthe has been accepted for publication in the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research.

Senior psychology major Rachel Garthe had her research paper accepted for publication in the academic publication “Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research.” Titled “The Effects of Self-Esteem and Aggression in Scottish Young Adults on Depression,” her paper will be featured in a future issue. The journal is an international, fully reviewed, quarterly journal dedicated to the publication of undergraduate student research.

Women’s Chorale announces raffle prize winner

The Women’s Chorale has been raising funds during fall term toward its concert tour to Ireland June 12-19, 2012. The fundraiser—which included a raffle prize of a four-day, three-night trip to Paris for two—culminated in a drawing by Benna Wilde after the Homecoming Concert on Sunday, Nov. 13. The winner was Sharon Falco.

When the Women’s Chorale embarks on its second tour abroad, the ensemble will give performances in Dublin, Galway and Killarney and visit the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, the Ring of Kerry and the urban life of Dublin.
