North Central College invites the public to a free presentation Nov. 2 on the benefits of learning the Chinese language.

The presentation, “Why Chinese?” will feature three guest speakers who speak fluent Chinese and who are Chicago-area managers of international business operations. The presentation will be particularly beneficial to high school and college-aged students considering Chinese studies, and for adults considering learning to use Chinese in their careers.

For just the sixth time in school history, the North Central College men’s cross country team achieved a perfect score at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships, sweeping the top five spots on Oct. 29 at Montrose Harbor for the dominating victory. The Cardinals have now won 38 consecutive CCIW titles in cross country and 45 overall while tallying a perfect score for the first time since 2009. North Central additionally achieved perfect scores in 2004, 1999, 1997 and 1987.



150 Moments: Old Main, 1870-

North Central College’s iconic Old Main building was dedicated Oct. 4, 1870, and refurbished and rededicated in October 1998.

After laying the cornerstone on May 17, 1870, Old Main came to represent the merging of North-Western College, which had just relocated from Plainfield, and the residents of Naperville. Old Main remains the oldest building on campus and one of the oldest buildings in the surrounding area.

Steve Macek, North Central College associate professor of speech communication and coordinator of urban and suburban studies, was invited to give a talk at Southern Illinois University (SIU), hosted by SIU’s Global Media Research Center in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts on Oct. 20. His talk, titled “One Hundred Fifty Years of Chicago Labor Media,” traced 150 years of Chicago’s labor media history against the backdrop of the city’s ever-changing political, social and economic landscape.

President Gael D. Swing, 1975-1990
North Central College’s eighth president was Gael Swing. Serving from 1975 to 1990, he introduced continuing education, Evening and Weekend College and more.

Gael D. Swing succeeded Arlo Schilling in 1975 to become the eighth president of North Central College. Born in Indiana, Swing received a bachelor’s degree from Franklin College in 1954 and a master’s degree from Indiana University in 1963.

After 15 years of working in admission and development at Franklin College, he joined Washington University (St. Louis) as director of special program services in the development office. He came to North Central College as executive vice president in 1973 before being named president.
