Sept. 15, 2011—North Central College is participating in a McCormick Foundation-funded study to help the state determine new requirements for principal preparation programs at Illinois colleges and universities.

North Central’s inclusion as a recipient of grant funds from the McCormick Foundation is the latest example of how North Central College’s undergraduate and graduate degrees in education are among the most rigorous in the State of Illinois, says Kristine Servais, associate professor of education and coordinator of master of education programs at North Central.

For the 18th consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report names North Central College among “America’s Best Colleges.”

North Central is ranked No. 23 in the Midwest in the Regional Universities category—schools that offer a full range of undergraduate and master’s degrees.

North Central College’s Residence Hall/Recreation Center has earned two construction awards for its sustainable design.

Sept. 15, 2011—North Central College’s innovative and environmentally friendly Residence Hall/Recreation Center has earned two construction awards for its sustainable design.

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) awarded the facility the 2011 honor for Best Sustainable Design. The Res/Rec Center also received an honorable mention in the Harry H. Edwards Industry Advancement Award category.

North Central College’s award-winning, student-run newspaper The Chronicle announces its editorial staff for the 2011-2012 academic year. The editors and staff include students with a wide range of academic majors.

“I’m really excited this year for The Chronicle,” faculty advisor and visiting assistant professor of English Philip Glende said. “We have a great staff in place, and we’ve also been working on ways to enhance The Chronicle and the student experience about the paper. I’m very optimistic about this year.”

This year’s record crop of 98 Presidential Scholars includes three sets of twins. The Presidential Scholarship is North Central’s largest financial award based on academic merit.

How is it that three pairs of siblings who happen to be among the brightest scholars in their high school classes all ended up choosing to attend North Central together?

North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst is among nine finalists for the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year Award.

“I’m very humbled and grateful,” Stumpenhorst said of his nomination. “We don’t go into this profession to receive recognition.”

Stumpenhorst, a 2003 graduate of North Central College, teaches language arts and social science to sixth graders at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville Community Unit School District 203. He credits his experience at North Central for helping him achieve success as an educator.

President's Message

Every summer Benna and I go off for a week or two to a cabin in the woods with a pile of books. It’s a ritual we have stuck to over more than 40 years of marriage—even in the years when our kids were growing up (they brought their own stacks of books)—a legacy of a love of books nurtured in our undergraduate years at small liberal arts colleges. I read nonfiction. She reads literature. Both of us do our best to ignore the headlines, the nightly news, the barrage of emails and text messages from planet Earth … even the wild turkeys running in the woods.

As part of Welcome Week activities, many new students volunteered their time and energy to go “Into the Streets” Saturday morning Sept. 10. Some 50 new students (photo) joined a canned food drive, coordinated by North Central College’s orientation staff and Office of Ministry and Service.
