Alumnus named Udall Scholar for study in engineering

North Central College alumnus Paul Roots ’07, a civil engineering student at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), was named a 2011 Udall Scholar for his commitment to the environment, leadership potential and academic achievement. Roots majored in music and jazz studies at North Central.

Wioleta Polinska, professor of religious studies and chair of philosophy and religious studies, gave a presentation titled “Engaging Religious Diversity: Towards a Pedagogy of Mindful Contemplation” at the Ninth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities at the Universidad de Granada in Granada, Spain. Held June 8-11, the annual conference explores key issues in the humanities and welcomes scholars and practitioners from a range of disciplines and professional areas who recognize the essential role the humanities must play in today's society.

SIFE students gain an appreciation for Hopi art while exploring new products for campus sales.

Three students who are active in Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) recently visited the Hopi School near the Grand Canyon in Arizona to learn more about Hopi art and build relationships that could result in the sale of products on campus. Arlinda Bajrami ’12, Katelyn Garris ’12, and Raine Tagare ’12, along with Matt Krystal, assistant professor of anthropology, and Gerald Thalman, associate professor of accounting, also helped dig a trench for electrical cable to power a new glassblowing studio.

The results, released today in The Chronicle’s fourth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities.

College hosts exhibit of art works by Monarch Landing residents Aug. 1-7

North Central College is hosting an exhibit of art works created by residents of the Monarch Landing continuing care retirement community in Naperville.

More than 20 Monarch Landing residents will exhibit their original artwork, including paintings, metal sculpture, fiber arts, photography and Japanese book-binding. The juried exhibit is free, open to the public and will run Aug. 1-7 in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville.

Gems gives lecture in Cuba

Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, gave talk on sport, ethnicity, assimilation theory at the World Congress of the Sociology of Sports.

Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, presented a lecture titled “Sport, Ethnicity, and Assimilation Theory: The Case of Italian Americans” at the weeklong World Congress of the Sociology of Sports in Havana, Cuba, on July 13. He was also interviewed by the Cuban press for an article to be published in all Cuban papers.
