May 17, 2012—Andrea Hehn of Portland, Ore., was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student in Interdisciplinary Studies Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.
Hehn is a senior pursuing an individualized major in environmental studies at North Central College. She is the daughter of Lyle and Carrie Hehn and is a 2008 graduate of U.S. Grant High School.
The College does not offer a major program in environmental studies, but students may declare an individualized major in programs not offered by the College.
“Environmental studies can lead to a wide variety of careers,” she says. “I just hope I end up working outdoors.”
She held a summer internship with the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Ill., where she measured water quality of aquatic systems. She has also participated in Green Scene, a student organization dedicated to educating the campus community on environmental responsibility. Her name regularly appears on the College’s Dean List, which recognizes students with high grade-point averages.
