Abbey Smith was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Major in Journalism Award during Honors Day May 17 at North Central College.
Smith is a graduating senior majoring in print journalism and international relations and has been accepted to work with AmeriCorps in Wisconsin after graduation and will be tutoring low-achieving students. She is a graduate of Dodgeville High School.
As co-editor-in-chief this year of The Chronicle, North Central’s student-run newspaper, Smith earned two awards from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA), for newswriting and front-page layout. As a member of the College’s chapter of Model United Nations she was part of group that represented Equatorial Guinea at a national conference in New York City. She spent her spring break this year volunteering with a Habitat for Humanity project in Tulsa, Okla.
