A lifelong Chicago Bears fan, Lauren gained enough experience at North Central to land an internship at the Bears summer training camp. As an advertising and special events intern, she organized the public activities surrounding the launch of the NFL season. “It was especially crazy with new quarterback, Jay Cutler,” she says. “We had 6,000 to 7,000 people in the stands every day.”

Lauren also developed sports leadership skills on campus. “I worked in the athletics office and organized game-day activities on campus,” she says. “I also played basketball for two and a half years.”

“If you have a passion for sports, I recommend majoring in sport management. There are so many opportunities to build your resume at a school of North Central’s size. You take a variety of classes and learn many ways to build a career in sports.”

For Lauren, two of those opportunities were internships. One of the internships helped define her career interest. It involved interviewing student-athletes and writing their stories for publication on the College’s athletics website and distribution to media. “I discovered I like writing in sports journalism and want to work in this field.”

“North Central’s sport management program is unlike anyone else’s. I met people who are in the jobs I want to be in and I chose internships where I’m doing what I want to do.”

Brianna’s studies in sport management exposed her to what goes on behind the scenes of athletic competition. An internship with the athletic department taught her how to run a meet, recruit, set up equipment, and work with men’s and women’s programs. Her classes covered topics from economics to human resource management. Her role as a sportscaster with the student-run WONC-FM reinforced her desire to work at ESPN someday.
