Why choose English Studies at North Central College?
Using language effectively—reading deeply and writing clearly—are skills developed by a major in English Studies and are necessary and valuable for a wide range of careers. As you read historical and contemporary literary texts, you'll reflect upon global issues and consider connections across disciplines. You can learn about the value of writing to public debate and civic life through courses like Writing for Social Change. As a Writing Center tutor and as a writer or editor for the award-winning student newspaper The Chronicle, student humor magazine The Kindling and student literary magazine North Central Review, you'll gain valuable practical experience. And you'll top it off by collecting and reflecting upon your best work in a senior portfolio class.
You can also:
- Earn an optional upper level concentration in writing or literature.
- Specialize in journalism.
- Work toward your teaching certification by minoring in secondary education.
- Gain practical experience in student-run publications (newspaper, humor magazine, journal of creative writing).
- Join the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society and participate in nationwide undergraduate conferences and local social and service activities.
- Combine English with other majors, like political science or business, to prepare for graduate or law school or business careers.
- Conduct independent research requiring travel or special resources and present your results at local and national academic conferences with the support of a Richter Independent Study Fellowship grant.
