Title IX
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Legal Citation: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX)
Each college or university receiving Federal financial assistance must designate at least one professional employee as the Title IX Coordinator to oversee compliance efforts and investigate any complaint of sex discrimination.
The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the overall implementation of Title IX for the College. Major duties include, but are not limited to, monitoring the following areas.
- Admissions and Recruitment
- Educational Programs and Activities
- Housing
- Comparable facilities
- Participation in extra-curricular activities
- Financial assistance
- Student employment assistance
- Health services and student insurance
- Marital or parental status
- Athletics & physical education
Adoption of procedures to provide prompt and equitable resolution of complaints is a critical function of the Title IX Coordinator. The Coordinator can assist persons alleging sexual harassment or discrimination in filing their grievance(s). In carrying out this responsibility, the Coordinator may work in concert with other College officials, including the Dean of Students, the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, and others.
