North Central College swimmers and two coaches traveled to Guapiles, Costa Rica, for a week of training and a dual meet against Asociación Brumosa de Natación. The swimmers held practice twice a day and dined around the town, says Jake Nurczyk, who experienced his first trip out of the country.
“In Puerto Viejo we did some open water swimming, going out a half mile into the ocean. It was somewhat scary at first because, you know—sharks—but it was also really amazing and there was coral one foot beneath you on the ocean floor.”
Adds Katie Stratton, “It was the best training trip I ever had. What’s great about our team is that we motivate one another. We also quickly learned the difficulties of going abroad without knowing a second language. We had our assistant coach Mark Schmitt translate for us. Overall, the trip was really positive and very motivational.”
