The majority of my academic experience has been in media studies and broadcast. I love telling the stories of people, especially those who otherwise would have no voice. Since I would be traveling to Kenya’s slum Kiberia as part of North Central’s Ministry and Service trip, Steve Macek, associate professor of speech communication, encouraged me to look into community radio stations there.
Pamoja FM is a community station in Kibera run by volunteers who broadcast 24/7. I contacted the station manager and within 24 hours he invited me to the station, where for two weeks I conducted interviews to gain an understanding of the station’s impact and influence on the people of Kibera.
I plan to use these interviews, as well as programming from the station, to produce an audio documentary.
