Students who are awake early enough can watch their political science professor, Stephen Maynard Caliendo, providing political analysis for the CBS 2 Chicago Morning News. Most recently, he appeared on the morning news at 6:10 a.m. after the October 3 presidential debate. He also is a frequent contributor to WDCB-FM 90.9.
In August, Caliendo braved hurricane warnings, huge crowds and hectic scheduling to attend the national conventions of both political parties. “Being there provides me with ongoing historical perspective about nominating conventions that I am able to draw on during class discussions,” he says. In addition to witnessing first-hand the current state of the political parties, Caliendo was advising 50 high school students who were part of Junior State of America, which offers civic education and leadership programs.
Caliendo is a recognized expert and published author in the field of political communication and political psychology, race and politics, and human rights. His classes are among the most popular at North Central, including his upcoming winter term seminar, Politics and Music.
