Lacrosse comes to North Central College
North Central College’s lacrosse team is the first women’s varsity NCAA Division III program in the state of Illinois. It made its long-awaited debut in front of a spirited crowd at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Saturday, March 14, against Adrian College (Michigan).
“Thrill is the only word you can use,” says head coach Jenni Kapanen, who worked for nearly two years to build the program from the ground up. “It was a day I had been waiting for, so when it finally came, I couldn’t have been happier. I was overwhelmed by the amount of support we received from the school and the fans.”
First-year student Amy Frazzini of Orland Park, Ill., scored the first goal in school history, finding the back of the net with 22:37 left in the first half. Frazzini also scored the Cardinals’ second goal in the contest, breaking free of the Adrian defense with 2:34 remaining. “Amy is a great example of how well you can do in this sport with hard work and dedication,” says Kapanen. “Everyone on the team is gaining more experience.”
