North Central College begins Sesquicentennial year with record enrollment

North Central College begins its Sesquicentennial year with record enrollment of more than 3,000 students.

Sept. 6, 2011—North Central College begins its Sesquicentennial year with a record number of students.

The College—which on Nov. 11 will mark the 150th anniversary of its 1861 founding—anticipates total enrollment to exceed 3,000 as the 2011-2012 academic year begins. The year is expected to begin with more than 2,700 undergraduate students and nearly 300 graduate students.

Mitzel is nominated in the Best Radio Podcast category of the annual Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) National Student Production Awards.

The Student Silver Dome Awards are presented each fall by the Illinois Broadcasters Association to the top college and university radio and TV programs in the state.

Student-athlete James Hoffman of Minooka is profiled in a Joliet Herald News article in which he talks about the upcoming 2012 track and field season and his interest in interactive media studies.

Hoffman will be begin his senior year as a Cardinal this fall and told his hometown paper he has a specific athletic goal in mind for his final year at North Central.

“I’d really, really like to qualify for nationals in the 400 hurdles,” he said.

The New American Colleges and Universities will honor education researchers Alexander and Helen Astin during the 2011 NAC&U Summer Institute June 22-24 at North Central College.

The Astins are the event’s keynote speakers and the first recipients of the NAC&U Ernest L. Boyer Award. The theme of the 15th annual Summer Institute is, “The New American Colleges and Universities: From Founding Conversations to 21st Century Best Practices.”

The Princeton Review has named North Central College as among the most environmentally responsible colleges in North America.

The education services company in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) selected North Central College for inclusion in the second annual edition of “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition.”

North Central College students, alumni impacted by disaster in Japan

Life in Japan is gradually returning to normal for North Central College student Ereka Funkhouser.

Funkhouser—a junior majoring in Japanese and classical civilization—studies at Iwate University in Morioka, a town of about 300,000 located in the Iwate Prefecture. She was shaken by the March 11 earthquake, but her school 40 miles from the coast was not directly impacted by the devastating tsunami.
