July 1, 2011—North Central College’s Leadership, Ethics and Values (LEV) program recently cosponsored the first National Faith, Justice and Civic Learning Conference with DePaul University, providing students and staff the opportunity to present three sessions on various topics.

The May 17 inauguration of Troy D. Hammond as the 10th president of North Central College is part of a week that includes honors ceremonies, concerts and a fireworks display.

The inauguration occurs during Cornerstone Week, May 13-19, an annual celebration that commemorates the College’s 1870 move to Naperville from Plainfield and the laying of the cornerstone for Old Main. Some events will be webcast live. The week includes the following events:

Hoodie Allen performs May 18 at North Central College with The Ready Set, Outasight

North Central College welcomes American hip-hop artist Hoodie Allen in concert May 18 with opening acts Outasight and The Ready Set.

The performance begins at 9 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in North Central’s Residence Hall/Recreation Center, 440 S. Brainard St. Tickets are $20; call 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix. The concert is presented by North Central College’s Fine and Performing Arts, College Union Activities Board (CUAB) and Office of Alumni Relations.

“The Long Road” features wood sculptures, ceramics and mixed media artwork by seniors Jesse Barr of Oswego and Jeremy Thurlby of Montgomery. The exhibit runs April 8 through May 3 in the Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St. An artist reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 19; complimentary refreshments will be served.

Artwork of four North Central College students is featured in the monthlong exhibit “Digital Design.”

All pieces displayed in “Digital Design” are computer-generated and include print posters, motion graphics and animation created by seniors Amber Dvorak of Schiller Park; Tanya Fetzer of Richmond, Ill.; Samantha Suarez of Romeoville; and Sarah Wilm of Westmont. The exhibit runs April 6 through May 3 in the Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St., Naperville. An artist reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9; complimentary refreshments will be served.

North Central College hosts Intersection, an annual day of service in the community. Volunteers can choose among 22 different service projects.

North Central College students earn five national awards, more than two dozen honors during Intercollegiate Broadcasting System contest.

North Central College students earned five national awards and more than two dozen total honors during the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) competition March 2 in New York City.

The students are all broadcasters for WONC-FM 89.1, North Central’s student-run radio station.

Ellsworth St. An artist reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 30; complimentary refreshments will be served.

As snow falls, students clear away snow, lift spirits

North Central College student-athletes perform intentional acts of kindness across campus, clearing off snow-covered cars, encouraging others to do the same.

During a recent snow storm, members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) were outdoors brushing off snow from cars parked in campus parking lots. These good deeds were done without fanfare but some students were caught in the act.

After students brushed snow off a car, they left behind a customized ice scraper with a business card encouraging car owners to pass along a similar act of kindness.
