A new North Central College scholarship honors the legacy of the late educator and public servant Mary Lou Cowlishaw.

The Mary Lou Cowlishaw Scholarship for Lederman Scholars will help offset tuition costs for academically gifted high school students who earn college credit by enrolling in North Central College’s Lederman Scholars program.

Field Museum internship leads to scholarship for North Central College anthropology major

North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

May 8, 2012—North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

Pantel, a junior, interned with The Field Museum in Chicago during winter term and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship for her work with the museum. The award was announced May 1 when Gloria Levitt, associate registrar in The Field Museum’s Department of Anthropology, hosted a talk at North Central about career opportunities in sociology and anthropology.

Formation of international connections and the development of the Japanese program are important milestones in the College's history.

Throughout the Sesquicentennial Celebration, there have been efforts to focus on certain aspects of the College’s history. One of the Sesquicentennial Committee’s goals was to encourage the organization of  events to spotlight some of these important stories, such as the College’s international connections, its  relationship with Japanese students and the development of the Japanese program. During Homecoming 2011, a reunion was held of alumni from Japan and those who studied in Japan.

Special Feb. 21 Campus Coffee to showcase North Central’s rich history and longtime connections with Japan, including authentic food, attire.

The College will host a special Campus Coffee on Feb. 21 that will focus on the rich history and longtime connections between Japan and North Central College.

Faculty and staff who attend the Campus Coffee on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Smith Hall, will enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine, interaction with students from Japan and those learning Japanese, and learning about the College’s connection with Japan.
