Daniel Kerley earns Senior Scholar-Athlete Award at Honors Convocation

Senior psychology major Daniel Kerley earns Scholar-Athlete Award for fourth year for highest GPA during North Central’s 2013 Honors Convocation.

Daniel Kerley, son of William and Teri Kerley of Vienna, Ill., was awarded the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College. The award recognizes the student-athlete in each class with the highest grade-point average. Daniel has received the Scholar-Athlete Award all four years at North Central.

A senior, Daniel is majoring in psychology at North Central College and is a graduate of Vienna High School.

Karen Hill wins Cleo Tanner Award for Outstanding Contributions to North Central’s women’s athletics during National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration.

Karen Hill was honored as the College’s eighth Cleo Tanner Award winner for Outstanding Contributions to North Central College Women’s Athletics on Tuesday, Feb. 5, as part of the 27th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration.

Hill was named North Central’s head coach in 1977 for both the women’s basketball and volleyball teams, or half the women’s varsity athletic programs, and made significant contributions during her six years as coach. Read more.

Another banner year for devoted alumna

For some 25 years, Caroline Smith ’69 Lewis has volunteered to construct national championship banners for North Central College's athletic department.

A stream of red and white national championship banners in the Residence Hall/Recreation Center grows steadily, thanks to the talents of North Central’s student-athletes, their coaches and Caroline Smith ’69 Lewis. The Naperville resident donates her time, talent and materials to construct the banners.

“One thing I won’t do is buy any of the materials ahead of time,” she says. “If I were to have it on hand, they might not win. I only buy what I need after Al (Carius) calls me to say they won.”

North Central College’s senior athletic training students compete in final round, take fourth place at IATA College Bowl.

North Central College’s athletic training students returned from competition at the 2012 Illinois Athletic Trainers Association (IATA) College Bowl, an annual event held during the two-day IATA State Meeting and Clinical Symposium. This year’s contest of knowledge and skill was held Nov. 4 at the Wyndham Lisle-Chicago Hotel.

North Central’s competitors—seniors Matthew Hussey, Kristi Lishman and Jason DePue—represented the College’s athletic training education program, with Trevor Magnotti standing ready to serve as alternate.

Tammy S. The conference brought together professionals working in higher education, K-12 schools, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as pre-service teachers and school nurses.

A recent tradition by the North Central College athletics department of raising funds for the American Cancer Society will continue Saturday, Sept. 29, during the Cardinals’ football game against Elmhurst College.

As is the case with many across the country, members of the Cardinal football program have been impacted by cancer in recent years. One team member’s experiences of watching several members of his family fight a battle, which has claimed so many casualties, have served as his own rallying cry to press forward and pursue his dreams.

Josh McLeod ’12 suited up with Germany's Frankfurt Universe

Josh McLeod’s dream of playing pro football became reality after signing and playing with Germany’s Frankfurt Universe pro team after North Central graduation.

Growing up in nearby Lisle, Ill., former North Central College safety Josh McLeod ’12 dreamed of playing professional football. Unlike many of his peers, McLeod achieved his dreams this summer, taking an unconventional route to the pro ranks by signing a contract with the Frankfurt Universe of the German Football League (GFL).

“My dream and goal since I was in junior high was to play pro football,” said McLeod. “I never thought it would be overseas, though.”
