Alumni talk with science students about their careers, experiences

Science faculty invite 2005 alumni Naomi Roots and Zach Pratt, Ph.D., to talk with students about post-graduate research, real-world career experiences.

A new tradition—inviting alumni back to campus to talk informally with students—was incorporated as part of programming for Honors Day and the Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research this year.

“Our alumni are an untapped resource for our students and I’m excited about inviting them back to share their experiences with our science students,” said Professor of Biology and Roger and Nadeane Hruby Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Stephen Johnston as he welcomed two North Central College alumni from the class of 2005.

More than 2,300 people shared lunch May 18 at North Central College’s Cornerstone Picnic and groundbreaking for the Riverwalk Gateway project.

More than 2,300 people shared lunch May 18 at North Central College’s Cornerstone Picnic, which included a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Riverwalk Gateway project.

Community members joined students, faculty and staff for a “Foods of Naperville” featuring complimentary menu samples from more than a dozen Naperville restaurants. Entertainment was provided by student performers—including a jazz ensemble, cast members from an upcoming production of “Forever Plaid” and the “NCC Express” group of singers and dancers.

North Central College alumnus earns Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching

North Central College alumnus Robert Taylor is one of 10 Chicago-area educators being honored with 2012 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

May 16, 2012—North Central College alumnus Robert Taylor is one of 10 Chicago-area educators being honored as recipients of a prestigious 2012 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Taylor, who earned his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from North Central College in 2000, is a second-grade teacher at Central Road School in Community Consolidated School District 15 in Palatine.

District 15 announced Taylor was presented with the award May 9.

That was the advice North Central College students and others heard May 15 during the keynote address at the College’s 15th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research from professor, pharmaceutical researcher and North Central alumna Heather Carlson ’91.

Two alumni of North Central College’s music education program are being recognized by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 for excellence in teaching.

May 15, 2012—Two alumni of North Central College’s music education program are being recognized by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 for excellence in teaching.

Nicholas Janssen, a 2005 graduate of North Central College, received District 203’s Outstanding Early Educator Award for his work as choral director at Naperville North High School. Emily Steffen, a 2010 graduate, received the district’s Outstanding First-Year Teacher Award for her work at Naper and Ellsworth elementary schools.

The Cornerstone Picnic will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the Riverwalk Gateway north of Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 455 S. Brainard St.

North Central College welcomes a distinguished visiting scholar and alumna—Heather Carlson ’91—May 15 as keynote speaker for the College’s 15th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research. The Rall Symposium is a forum for North Central College undergraduate students to present their independent scholarly research projects, spanning all academic areas, and is part of a daylong Honors Day event that recognizes top student scholars and their academic achievements.

2011 alumna co-authors paper in journal

North Central College alumna Ashley Popp, class of 2011, co-authored a paper, titled “The Global Transformation of Belly Dancing: A Cross-Cultural Investigation of Counter Hegemonic Responses,” which was accepted for publication in the 2012 No LIV issue of the journal “Physical Culture and Sport. Studies and Research.”

North Central College is remembering a longtime stalwart of the College who passed away on May 3.

North Central College is remembering the service of alumnus and Life Trustee Albert Benedetti of Naperville, a longtime stalwart of the College who passed away on May 3. He was 88.

He was president of Bruno Benedetti & Sons, a Naperville home building company. A street in Naperville bears the family name, Benedetti Drive.
