Genevieve Brayton Towsley

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1979

Genevieve Towsley served her alma mater as an instructor in English and was a founding member of the Naperville Heritage Society. In 1975, she published a book, “Historic Naperville.” By 1976, Towsley was named Woman of the Year of the Naperville branch of the American Association of University Women. In 1978, she received an honorary doctor of letters degree from North Central. Towsley received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Department on Aging for her significant achievements in 1993. She wrote for the Naperville Sun from 1954 until her retirement in 1994.

Elmer A. Sundby

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1997

Elmer Sundby taught at North Central from 1956-72 and served as a graduate lecturer on learning disabilities at the National College of Education in Evanston, Ill. He retired from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he was a professor and chair of psychology and assistant to the vice chancellor of academic affairs. He has been a member of the Wisconsin Annual Conference Board of Higher Education and Ministry and has been active in the United Methodist Church. As a visiting scholar at the University of Minnesota for one year, Sundby was also a Ford Foundation Fellow, named to Who’s Who in the Midwest and cited as an Outstanding Educator in America. He is a member of many professional organizations and his contributions to the community include working with the Eau Claire Rotary Club and Eau Claire County Mental Health Association, mediating for the Eau Claire County small claims court and delivering books to shut-ins as a library volunteer.

George St. Angelo

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1988

George St. Angelo has spent a lifetime in service to his church and community. He earned a master of divinity degree from Evangelical Theological Seminary, attended the London School of Economics and was ordained by the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1949. His pastorates include churches in San Pierre/Wanatah, Ind., Indianapolis and Chicago. From 1955-66, St. Angelo served as chaplain at North Central College and was a founding member of Hope United Church of Christ in Naperville. He continued his denominational affiliation as a retired member of the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1968, St. Angelo established Seminars International, an organization dedicated to international travel as a tool of education, good will, hope and enjoyment. His tours included seminars on theology, politics and social issues. He retired after 31 years of service. St. Angelo earned a doctor of humanities in 1999 from the University of Indianapolis, where he also serves on the board of directors.

John Stamm

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1954

Bishop John Stamm was a lecturer, Bible teacher, author and churchman. He was also the first recipient of the North Central College Distinguished Alumnus Award. He completed a bachelor of divinity at Evangelical Theology Seminary in 1927; received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Albright College in 1935 and an honorary doctor of humane letters from North Central College in 1949. He also received an honorary doctor of sacred theology degree at Dickinson College in 1951. He served on numerous boards of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and was vice president and president of the Federal Council of Churches. He was also listed in Who’s Who in America.

Anton Senty

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1968

Anton “Red” Senty was a general supervisor at Western Electric Company where he worked for 30 years. He was involved in North Central College’s Board of Trustees in 1964 and was named Life Trustee in 1973. During the last 20 years at Western Electric, he worked in supervisory positions and had various responsibilities. A chief steward in charge of finances for the first E.U.B. Church of Naperville, he was active in civic and community affairs with Y.M.C.A., Edward Hospital and the Naperville Country Club.

Doretha Zehnder Seder

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1970

Doretha Zehnder Seder graduated from North Central College in 1926. She also studied at the University of Minnesota, William and Mary College, the University of Munich and the American University of Washington. Seder was a member of the College and Seminary Board of Trustees, serving as vice chairman and a member and secretary of the executive committee. She served on the Alumni Board and was an alumni representative to the North Central Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the General Centennial Committee.

Paul Schwab

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1983

Paul Schwab began his private practice in 1965, during which time he was also on the faculty at the University of Chicago. Currently, Dr. Schwab lectures third-year medical students on psychopharmacology at the University. In 1991 and 2003, he was named the department’s outstanding teacher. Schwab is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has served as a North Central College Trustee since 1980 and chaired the Board committees of academic and student affairs, admission, financial aid, and student development. Schwab served as president of North Central’s Alumni Association from 1979-80 and was a recipient of the Gael D. Swing Award for Meritorious Service in 2001. In early 2004, North Central’s psychology research lab in Goldspohn Hall was officially named the Dr. Paul J. Schwab Psychology Research Center in his honor. Schwab was recently named Life Trustee of North Central College.

Milford D. Schulz

Outstanding Alumni Award Winner 1977

Dr. Milford Schulz was chief radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, specializing in radiation therapy. He served as a radiologist at Huntington Memorial Hospital at Harvard University and an associate clinical professor of radiology at the Harvard University Medical School. Dr. Schulz was also a consultant to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Clinic in Radio Therapy. A pioneer researcher who set up radiology situations in Europe, he was one of the first to use the 1,000,000-volt treatment machine for cancer. He was the first professor of radiation therapy at Harvard University Medical School.

Lucille Erffmeyer Schroeder

Lucille Erffmeyer Schroeder served in many leadership positions for a variety of women’s groups. She was also listed in the following Who’s Who publications: Two Thousand Women of Achievement, 1972; Who’s Who of American Women, 1972-83; The World’s Who’s Who of Women, 1973; Who’s Who in the Midwest, 1972-73; and the Dictionary of International Biography, 1974.

Her husband Clair Schroeder, also an Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient, held a variety of leadership positions at numerous colleges, churches and community organizations across the United States. He also served his alma mater as a member of the Alumni Board and class representative.
