ABC7 Chicago reports on how the North Central College football team is rallying behind head coach John Thorne, whose wife Kathie is battling cancer.

As the Cardinals advance in the NCAA Division III football playoffs, players are showing their support for the Thornes by playing with shaved heads in a show of solidarity with their coach. Kathie Thorne, who has attended games this season in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable form of blood cancer.

Senior psychology major has research paper accepted for publication

Research paper by North Central College senior Rachel Garthe has been accepted for publication in the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research.

Senior psychology major Rachel Garthe had her research paper accepted for publication in the academic publication “Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research.” Titled “The Effects of Self-Esteem and Aggression in Scottish Young Adults on Depression,” her paper will be featured in a future issue. The journal is an international, fully reviewed, quarterly journal dedicated to the publication of undergraduate student research.

North Central College students have been chipping away at archaeological remains from an ancient fortress in Jordan, in cooperation with the Field Museum.

During fall term, nine students have been chipping away at archaeological remains as part of their course work in Archaeology in Jordan SOA 390, a new class based on original research conducted by Edward Maher, lecturer in anthropology and the classics.

Mac (James MacArthur) Willaert ’13, a music major and pianist at North Central College, is one of the finalists to make it to the second round of “Queen Extravaganza,” a nationwide talent search for America’s top young musicians. Legendary rocker Roger Taylor of Queen is assembling a band of rising musicians in honor of Queen’s 40th anniversary tour in 2012.

Student Emily Rademaker named North Central College 2011 Lincoln Laureate

North Central College faculty chose senior Emily Rademaker as this year’s Lincoln Laureate for her excellence in academics and co-curricular involvement.

Nov. 11, 2011—Emily Rademaker of Cary, Ill., has been named North Central College’s 2011 Lincoln Laureate, an annual award that honors outstanding seniors at four-year degree-granting institutions in Illinois. North Central College faculty selected Rademaker as the College’s top senior for her excellence in curricular and co-curricular activities.

Governor Pat Quinn presented Rademaker with a medallion, certificate of achievement and a check for $500 on Nov. 6 at the House of Representatives in Springfield.

North Central College junior Molly Gstalter studies full time in Heidelberg, Germany, while interning as English teacher to students in local secondary school.

Molly Gstalter, a North Central College junior, has expanded her studying abroad experience during fall term in Heidelberg, Germany, by pursuing an internship. Gstalter is taking classes in German full time at the Heidelberg Universität through the American Junior Year Program, while also interning as an assistant English teacher at Hölderlin Gymnasium, a secondary school in Heidelberg.

Gstalter carries a major in German and minors in secondary education and English language learning at North Central College and is a resident of Skokie, Ill.

Athletic training students among best in state in contest, one wins scholarship

North Central College’s team of athletic training seniors takes second place at Illinois Athletic Trainers Association College Bowl.

Each year, students and staff members in North Central College’s athletic training education program attend the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association (IATA) Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium for education and to compete in the College Bowl.

This year’s event was held Nov. 5-6 in Bloomington and the College Bowl competition, involving 11 participating teams, took place Nov. 6. The College Bowl is held annually at the state meeting and utilizes a “Jeopardy” format, with three rounds and a final question.

WONC hosts John Drury High School Radio Awards Nov. 19

Nov. 7, 2011—Chicago ABC 7 News anchor/reporter John Garcia will join John Madormo, general manager of North Central College’s nationally acclaimed WONC-FM 89.1, on Nov. 19 to honor the best of high school radio broadcasters for 2011.

Garcia will address nominees and announce winners for the ninth annual John Drury High School Radio Awards at a ceremony beginning at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19, in the College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. The event is hosted by North Central College and WONC radio.

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 wins Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 gets to go to NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. He’ll also get to meet President Obama and the first lady at a White House dinner in the spring. He may even be invited to throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game.

Those are some of the perks that come with being named the Illinois Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012. The Illinois State Board of Education announced the award Oct. 22 during the Those Who Excel banquet in Normal.
