Eco-friendly Commencement includes caps, gowns, bottles

Although the graduates’ caps and gowns will look the same, they aren’t. This year, the College showed its commitment to sustainability by using a new line of eco-friendly graduation wear made from 100 percent, post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. With millions of plastic bottles ending up in landfills daily and remaining there for generations, the academic apparel manufacturer Oak Hall introduced its new GreenWeaver line, which uses 23 bottles per gown.

Kept a secret till the end of Honors Convocation May 18, President Wilde announced Sunbir Gill as the Outstanding Senior Man. “Sunny” has been a familiar face and respected leader on campus since his freshman year. He served as president of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) his senior year and his strong work ethic and hands-on approach to leading have been instrumental in opening the SIFE store and leading his team to the national championships for two years.

Laurel White was named the 2010 Outstanding Senior Woman. Earlier during Honors Convocation, she was also recognized as the Outstanding Student in the Arts & Letters Division and Outstanding Student in English and received the Megan Sweeney Award for achieving the highest level of academic excellence. A College Scholar, White will graduate with a double major in English writing and interactive media studies and a minor in social change/public advocacy. She is president of the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta, a tutor in the Writing Center, two-time presenter at the National C

Naperville-area high school students can learn about earning college credit while still in high school during an Open House for the Lederman Scholars Program May 12 at North Central College.

The Open House kicks off with registration at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, in Smith Hall on the second floor of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St., Naperville.
