Chronicle of Higher Education names North Central a “Great College to Work For”

North Central College is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

July 25, 2011—North Central College is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The results, released today in The Chronicle’s fourth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities.

Course on College's archives among fall 2011 Community Education programs

North Central College is offering the opportunity to learn about the College’s extensive archives through a course in the Community Education program.

“With the college celebrating its Sesquicentennial this fall, our on-campus archivist will be running a course on the history of the College and showing many of the artifacts that have been maintained throughout the years,” said Deanna Taylor, the College’s community education program director.

July 11, 2011—As the City of Naperville moves forward with implementing the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative (NSGI), the City recently recognized its partnership with North Central College and its students in conducting a survey to gauge utility customers’ existing understanding and perceptions of the NSGI.

Musical theatre major cast in production by renowned summer stock theater company

Daryn Harrell, a musical theatre major at North Central College, has been cast in a production by Timber Lake Playhouse, the oldest continuously operating professional summer theatre in Illinois.

Harrell, of Peoria, will star in “Children of Eden,” a musical by Stephen Schwartz, the Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer who has written the hit Broadway musicals “Godspell” and “Wicked” and music for the films “Pocahontas” and “Enchanted.” “Children of Eden” is based on the Book of Genesis and is one of five summer productions by Timber Lake Playhouse, based in Mount Carroll.

Theatre major Angie Snodgrass is named the College’s Outstanding Senior Woman, the highest award presented to a female member of the Class of 2011.

June 3, 2011—Angie Snodgrass, a North Central College senior majoring in theatre, was named the College’s Outstanding Senior Woman, the highest award presented to a member of the Class of 2011.

A Naperville resident and formerly of Byron, Ill., she is the daughter of Jeffery and Cathy Huber of Naperville and a graduate of Byron High School.

The Outstanding Senior Woman award was presented in May at North Central’s Honors Convocation, an annual spring event that recognizes student excellence in academics and co-curricular activities.

Future law student Josh Bailey is named the College’s Outstanding Senior Man, the highest award presented to a male member of the Class of 2011.

June 3, 2011—Joshua Bailey, a North Central College senior majoring in English writing and political science, was named the College’s Outstanding Senior Man, the highest award presented to a member of the Class of 2011.

A Galesburg, Ill., resident, he is the son of Brian and Patty Bailey and a graduate of Galesburg High School.

Christian Wiman, editor of Poetry magazine, will deliver the address June 11 at the 146th Commencement ceremony of North Central College, which is celebrating the Sesquicentennial of its founding in 1861.

Honorary degrees will be awarded to Brenda Barnes, former chief executive of Sara Lee Corporation; Roger Hruby, a business leader and entrepreneur; and Myron Wentz, a scientist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and best-selling author. Hruby and Wentz are alumni of North Central College.

North Central College students, professor to present paper at psychology conference

Two North Central College students and a professor will present a paper at the Fifth Annual International Conference on Psychology.

May 2, 2011—A paper authored by two North Central College students and a professor has been selected for presentation at the Fifth Annual International Conference on Psychology.

The paper, “Short Term Positive Emotions: Building Resources and Unravelling Negativity” is authored by psychology professor Karl Kelley and students Brandi Balensiefen and Jessica VandenBerg. The conference will be held May 30 through June 2 in Athens, Greece.
