First-year students experience life in New Orleans

First-year student Gail Oesterle reflects on her experiences learning and serving in New Orleans.

A group of North Central students spent a week in New Orleans this December as part of the First-Year Experience program. Over the summer, all incoming first-year students read the Dave Eggers book “Zeitoun” about a family’s struggles in the Crescent City following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in 2005. The theme of “Building an Ideal City” was explored during the seven-week FYE 100 course in the fall.

Two members of North Central’s Mock Trial team were recognized at the University of St. Francis Mock Trial Midwest Challenge Part V Tournament Dec. 4-5. Joshua Bailey ’11, majoring in political science and English writing, earned awards for Outstanding Attorney and Outstanding Witness—a notable achievement because students are rarely recognized for exceptional performance in both roles.

Two seniors showcase their art in exhibit

The art work of two senior art majors, Ali Urasky and Marcy Thomas, will be showcased in an exhibit titled "Treasured Undesirables" during February.

Jan. 25, 2011—North Central College will showcase the art work of two senior art students during a month-long exhibit, Feb. 1-28.

Titled “Treasured Undesirables,” the free exhibit will be on display in North Central’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St., Naperville. The artists will greet visitors during an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Men’s cross country finishes in top 2

The men completed their cross country season at No. 2 among 32 teams at the NCAA Division III National Championships—the team’s third straight top two finish.

The men completed their 2010 cross country season at No. 2 among 32 competitors at the NCAA Division III National Championships Nov. 20. Haverford College (Pa.) captured the team National Title.

“Basically we had two guys from our top 15 returning and how this team developed over the course of the year was a coach’s dream. I couldn’t be prouder how these guys stepped up and filled the gaps in such a short time,” said head coach Al Carius.

The football team scored on its first nine possessions, ending with 612 yards in a dominating 57-7 victory over St. Norbert College in its first playoff round.

William Muck, assistant professor of political science, and economics major Etienne Mashuli ’13 co-authored an op-ed piece on international NGO website.

William Muck, assistant professor of political science and coordinator of global studies, and Etienne Mashuli ’13, economics major, co-authored an op-ed piece about the Robin Hood Tax campaign that was posted on the website of an international NGO focused on global poverty. Their comments about the proposed Robin Hood Tax, a small fee on all global financial market transactions to raise money to help fight poverty, were made in the context of the recent G20 Summit in Seoul, Korea.
