North Central College is offering a new option to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master of leadership studies degree in just five years.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Nov. 16, 2010)—North Central College is offering a new option to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master of leadership studies degree in just five years.

Students accepted into this program earn both a bachelor’s degree—in any discipline—and the master of leadership studies with the completion of 141 credit hours.

Challenging New Leaders

Graduate students enrolled in the new Administration of Higher Education class are learning their lessons from a real pro. Preparing these aspiring future leaders in higher education is Gary Ireland, now director of student development and assistant dean of students.

Formerly the College’s dean of students, Ireland is now sharing his 25 years of experience by teaching graduate-level classes and mentoring graduate assistants. Most of the students in his fall term class are specializing in the new higher education leadership track within the master of leadership studies program.

Commencement 2010: A Notable Finale

A stormy forecast on June 12 provided the perfect opportunity to enlist the air-conditioned and roomy environment of the new Res/Rec Center for the College’s 145th Commencement. After a few adjustments to the traditional procession and with the help of audio-visual equipment, the 598 graduates who attended and their families and friends enjoyed the ceremony while thunder boomed outside.

Christopher Smith of Oak Lawn, Ill., son of Richard and Nanette Smith and a graduate of Oak Lawn Community High School, was named the 2010 recipient of the Mark A. Reid Student Leadership Award during North Central College's Commencement exercises on June 12.

Leadership, Ethics & Values: An Enduring Mission

It has been 20 years since North Central College President Gael Swing announced a “distinctive new program,” designed to “help train not only tomorrow’s leaders, but to help present-day decision-makers as well.” He called it “Leadership, Ethics and Values” (LEV), noting that “the program may be new, but the concept is an outgrowth of our heritage and our mission—to provide a liberal arts education designed to prepare students to live free, ethically responsible and intellectually rewarding lives.”
