The Cardinal football team travels to Redlands, Calif., for its first regular-season game against the University of Redlands on Saturday, Sept. 3. Cardinal fans can follow the live action on WONC-FM 89.1, online at WONC.org or live stats on the College’s athletic website. Kickoff time on Saturday is set for 9 p.m. CT in Chicago or 7 p.m. PT.

Tune in to the College’s student-run station WONC-FM 89.1 at 10 p.m. Friday, May 20, to hear a live studio interview and possible acoustic set with Jim Peterik, Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and guitar/keyboardist with the band The Ides of March, which performs in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in Pfeiffer Hall. Peterik is a founding member of Survivor and The Ides of March, a Chicago band which burst on the national scene in 1970 with the million-selling single “Vehicle.”

Ryan Pier ’11, sports director for WONC-FM 89.1, received a nomination for Best Sportscaster (in a small market) from the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) and is one of three vying for this Silver Dome Award. His competition includes sports reporters from two commercial stations: WKAN in Kankakee and WRMJ in Aledo. Piers produced a sports story that aired on WONC featuring the basketball prowess of the Raridon family. He will attend the IBA awards ceremony June 16 in Normal, Ill., where he’ll learn the winner.

John Madormo wins Grand Prize and more for synopsis

John Madormo, assistant professor of broadcast communications and general manager of WONC-FM 89.1, won two awards at the Reno Manhattan Shorts Film Festival, held in Reno, Nev., Sept. 25-26. The synopsis of his screenplay, Paulie Perkins P.I., won First Place in the Individual Family Film Division and the Grand Prize for Best Overall Synopsis in all categories. Paulie Perkins, P.I., is a story about a 12-year-old private detective.

John Madormo, assistant professor of broadcast communication and general manager of WONC-FM 89.1, took second place in the Comedy Division at the Chicago Screenwriters Network 2009 Midwest Screenwriting Contest for his screenplay, a comedy titled The Boys' Club.  It also reached the Semi-Finals of the 2009 Scriptapalooza International Screenplay Competition. The Boys’ Club is about five retired widowers who meet each day for coffee, doughnuts and an endless discussion of minutia.

Several WONC-FM 89.1 staff members were named national finalists in three categories by the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) National Student Production Awards, an annual competition for college and university radio stations. Winners will be announced Oct. 31 at the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas.
